Restoring art through AI: when the past meets the algorithm

Artificial intelligence is no longer content with predicting trends or generating images. It is now entering the field of visual heritage preservation - a major challenge for industries where image is identity.

In a project conducted at MIT, a student by the name of Alex Kachkine digitally restored a centuries-old oil painting attributed to the Prado Adoration Master in just a few hours. Where conventional methods would have required nearly 200 hours, artificial intelligence enabled a fine, rapid and documented reconstruction. Over 5,000 damaged areas were identified, digitally corrected with Adobe Photoshop, then printed on a transparent polymer bonded to the original work. The result? A visually repaired work, without any definitive physical alteration to the original.

A silent revolution for the image professions

This kind of innovation doesn't just concern galleries and curators. In the world of fashion, luxury goods or visual e-commerce, it heralds a major transformation: images are no longer frozen in time, but can be edited, restored and optimized.

What this case demonstrates is that a well-trained algorithm can :

  • recompose a missing element from a known style,

  • restore the colorimetric coherence of a large-scale work,

  • and above all: drastically reduce the cost and time of visual processing.

This is exactly what we do at Artcare, by developing AI virtual mannequins capable of wearing a garment, embodying it faithfully, and adapting to the requirements of an art director, stylist or marketing team - without ever sacrificing quality.

AI virtual mannequins: restoring intention, not just image

AI restoration of a work of art and AI generation of a virtual mannequin have one fundamental thing in common: they are both based on the notion of fidelity to the original style. At Artcare, each mannequin is conceived as a bespoke piece of design: morphology, attitude, light, texture? Nothing is left to chance.

This is what we call our "AI R&D applied to brand image" approach. Through tailor-made solutions (virtual try-it-on, intelligent packshots, expressive avatars), we help brands extend their visual heritage, giving it new formats and new uses - but without betraying it.

Preserving aesthetics, amplifying impact

Alex Kachkine's approach also raises a key ethical and aesthetic question: can we add an "algorithmic layer" to a work without altering its soul? It's this same vigilance that we integrate into every Artcare project: AI is an amplifier, not a substitute.

In a sector where visuals must be beautiful, coherent and effective (SEO, social networks, e-commerce), our IA virtual mannequins reconcile real time, graphic excellence and artistic direction.
